Upgrade to a DVD Burner
By Brandon | Last edited: June 7, 2008
CD burners changed the media world ever so quickly just a few years ago. However, this once brand new and innovative concept is growing increasingly ignored by the minute due to the rapid onset of the DVD burning age. These new DVD burners he=old not only the promise of higher quality and increased media holding capabilities than when burning onto a standard CD, but also came equipped to burn CD’s as well. All of sudden, people are finding themselves wondering if even having a CD burner any more is really worth it since a DVD burner could essentially do it all. However, there are still a few notable advantages to keeping that CD burner. The first question one has to ask themselves simply when choosing which drive to go with or whether to keep their CD burner is how often are they going to actually burn DVD’s? Sure, the thought of being able to burn DVD’s is an enticing one, but many people won’t be doing it very often. Money comes into play in this scenario due to the fact that CD burners can now be purchased at extremely low prices especially compared to the costly high-end DVD burners.
Another apparent factor is the speed of the CD burning offered by pure CD burners. Really, a CD burner is still a good thing to have in most cases because DVD burners usually only burn CD’s at a 12x to 16x rate. Granted, this isn’t exactly slow, but even cheap CD burners can burn at 52x and above. However, an even more notable aspect lies in the advantage of having two drives. If you can, you might as well just have both drives. This is especially advantageous when burning from one CD to another since you can pop in the original CD into the DVD-RW drive and then the blank disc into the CD burner and transfer in mere minutes.
While upgrading or replacing is indeed an appealing idea, there are still these factors that should be given at least some consideration prior to taking the steps. Sure, the CD burner may be becoming outdated, but the old dog still has some use left in it many will still find a lot of advantages to owning a CD burner.
